A tablet used occasionally on the road has a very different job from one that runs dispatch, navigation, inspections, work orders, and field reporting for an entire shift.
For Australian field teams, a complete tablet setup needs to keep the device secure, powered, and practical to use throughout the day. This guide explains how to plan a tablet mount setup for field teams that also accounts for the actual tablet and protective case, the conditions the vehicle works in, how often the device is removed, and whether charging or data connections need to remain reliable while the vehicle is moving.

A complete field tablet setup is more than the tablet holder. It brings together the vehicle mounting hardware, tablet holder or dock, power solution, approved installation position, and cable management needed for the device to work reliably throughout the shift.
For a field deployment, the next step is making sure the complete configuration suits the actual tablet, workday, and operating environment. A tablet mount setup for field teams should answer six questions before the hardware is ordered.

These decisions are related.
A holder may fit the tablet but block the charging port. A dock may provide power but not suit a thick third-party case. A setup may work perfectly on sealed roads but move too much on the roads the crew actually drives.
The whole configuration needs to be assessed together.
Do not specify the holder from the tablet's screen size alone.
Record the exact tablet model and then look at the device in its normal working configuration.
If the tablet uses a protective case, measure and assess it with that case fitted. If it has a hand strap, shoulder attachment, stylus holder, or other accessory, include that too.
Two tablets described as "10-inch tablets" can have noticeably different external dimensions. Protective cases add another variable.
Weight matters as well. A rugged tablet with an integrated case can place considerably different demands on the setup than a lightweight consumer tablet of a similar screen size.

The right level of retention depends on what happens to the tablet during a normal shift.
A tablet used in a metropolitan service van has different demands from one mounted in a 4WD that regularly travels on corrugated roads. A shared iPad that leaves the vehicle each evening also has different requirements from a rugged tablet permanently assigned to one vehicle.
Universal tablet holders are useful where flexibility matters.
They can suit fleets where several tablet models are in circulation, devices are replaced regularly, or the business does not want each vehicle tied to one exact tablet.
Compatibility still needs to be checked using the complete device dimensions.
This is particularly important when cases vary. A universal holder that comfortably fits a bare tablet may not suit the same device once a thick rugged case is installed.
When a business has standardised on one tablet platform, a device-specific cradle can provide a more consistent fit.
Locking retention may also be worth considering where tablets remain in vehicles, vehicles are shared between crews, or additional physical security is required at worksites.
Think about how often the tablet is removed.
If technicians take it out at every stop, insertion and removal should remain straightforward. If it stays in the cab for most of the day, stronger retention and security may matter more.
A powered dock can be useful when the tablet effectively becomes part of the vehicle's working equipment.
Instead of treating mounting and charging as separate systems, the dock can provide both device retention and power. Some docks also provide additional data connections for compatible enterprise tablets.
That can make sense for rugged tablets used heavily for dispatch, navigation, inspections, or field reporting.
It is not automatically the right choice for every team. If the tablet is removed frequently or used across several locations, a passive holder and separate charging arrangement may be simpler.
Power is one of the biggest differences between an occasional tablet mount and a field deployment.
A tablet may spend hours running with the screen active while GPS, mobile data, and work applications are in use. Cameras, scanning functions, and connected accessories can add to that workload.
The useful question is not simply whether the tablet can charge in the vehicle.
Can the charging setup support the way the tablet is used during a real working shift?
For some installations, a suitable USB-C Power Delivery charger may be enough. For a permanently assigned rugged tablet, an integrated powered dock can provide a cleaner and more consistent connection.

Also check what happens when the vehicle is switched off. Do not assume every 12V outlet behaves the same way. Confirm whether the intended power source is switched with the ignition or remains live while the vehicle is parked.
Cable reliability deserves attention too. A cable hanging loosely from the tablet can experience repeated movement as the vehicle travels over rough surfaces. If the tablet is inserted and removed several times each day, the charging connection becomes part of the workflow as well.
For a permanent installation, plan the power solution before finalising the mounting position.

This is where product specifications alone stop being enough.
A configuration can look suitable on paper and still need adjustment once it is put into the vehicle and used over the roads and sites the team actually encounters.

Tablets take up considerably more visual space than phones, so the final position deserves careful attention.
Check the installation with the tablet fitted and the driver in their normal seating position.
The device should not unnecessarily obstruct the driver's view, important controls, mirrors, or airbag deployment areas. Cable routing should also stay clear of pedals, steering, and normal vehicle access.
How the tablet is used matters too.
A tablet displaying navigation throughout the journey may need a different position from one that is normally operated only when the vehicle is stationary. A technician who carries the device onto every job may value easy removal more than constant in-cab access.
Screen glare and orientation can also become an issue. A mounting location may look ideal in the workshop but become frustrating when sunlight makes the display difficult to read for part of the day.
The best location is the one that works with the tablet, vehicle, and actual task.
Mounting a tablet does not mean every type of tablet interaction is permitted while driving.
In NSW, tablets are treated as digital screens. If a digital screen is visible to the driver, it generally must not be used while driving unless it is being used as a driver's aid, such as for navigation, dispatch or vehicle monitoring. In that case, the screen must be built into the vehicle or secured in a holder fixed to the vehicle.
In Victoria, a phone or tablet is considered a mounted device when it is secured to the vehicle using a holder commercially designed and manufactured for that purpose. Restrictions still apply to how mounted devices can be used, and the rules are stricter for learner and probationary drivers.
For a business fleet, it helps to separate two questions:
Is the tablet installed appropriately?
Is the intended use permitted for that driver in the jurisdiction where the vehicle is operating?
Road rules vary between Australian states and territories, so fleet policies should be checked against the current guidance from the relevant state or territory transport authority.
Do not make the first large fleet order the first time the complete tablet setup gets tested under normal conditions.
Install one representative configuration and put it through a real working day.
A useful acceptance test looks like this:
This test gives you information a static installation check cannot.
A setup that looks excellent in the workshop may behave differently after hours of vibration, frequent stops, and repeated tablet handling.
Once the setup passes the working-shift test, record it before installing another vehicle.
Capture the vehicle make, model, and year; the exact tablet and protective case; holder or dock; power method; mounting components; and approved position.
Add a photo of the finished installation and the date the configuration was tested.
That gives procurement and installers a known reference when the same vehicle and tablet combination appears again.
